A 42-year-old man in Palmas, Tocantins, has been convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison for the 2023 murder of his friend and roommate, Erivelton Rodrigues Lima, following a violent argument over a refused loan request.

A Tocantins court has delivered a verdict in a tragic case stemming from a personal dispute. Wilame Pereira Saraiva, 42, was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to 22 years behind bars for the stabbing death of his friend, Erivelton Rodrigues Lima, 31. The fatal confrontation occurred in June 2023 at the residence they shared in the Jardim Aureny III neighborhood of Palmas.

The sequence of events began with a disagreement over money. According to testimony presented during the trial, Saraiva had requested a loan from Lima, which was refused. This refusal escalated into a heated argument that turned deadly. The prosecution argued that the motive was trivial, centering on the financial dispute, and that the victim was caught off guard, limiting his ability to defend himself.

During the jury trial at the 1st Criminal Court of Palmas, the defendant offered his account of the incident. Saraiva claimed that after he declined to lend money, Lima became aggressive and attacked him with a knife. He stated he managed to disarm his friend and then inflicted the fatal wound, asserting he acted in self-defense. However, the jury ultimately rejected this version of events.

The court's decision highlighted several aggravating factors. The presiding judge, Cledson José Dias Nunes, emphasized the severity of committing such a violent act against a close friend. Furthermore, it was revealed that Saraiva was wearing an electronic ankle monitor at the time of the crime, a condition from prior convictions. The monitor was reportedly cut off during the early morning hours of the murder.

The victim's body was not immediately discovered. It was only found days later when Erivelton's father, unable to make contact with his son, went to the kitnet apartment to check on him. Following the homicide, Saraiva fled the state. He was eventually located and apprehended by authorities in São João dos Patos, Maranhão, on June 11, 2023.

The defendant remains in preventive detention as the legal process concludes. His defense, handled by the Public Defender's Office, has the right to appeal the conviction and the 22-year sentence. The case underscores the devastating consequences that can arise from domestic disputes and the swift action of the justice system in Tocantins.
