FIFA extends Prestianni's six-game ban for homophobic abuse of Vinicius Jr to all FIFA tournaments, including potential World Cup matches for Argentina.

FIFA has extended the suspension of Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni to all competitions under its jurisdiction, according to journalist Rob Harris. The decision means the Argentine will be unable to play in any FIFA-sanctioned tournaments, including the World Cup, while serving his ban.

Prestianni was originally handed a six-match suspension by UEFA for directing a homophobic slur at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the first leg of their Champions League playoff on February 17. The match, which Real Madrid won 1-0, marked a flashpoint in the tie.

Of the six-game ban, one match has already been served during the return leg on February 25, where Benfica lost 2-1. The remaining five matches include three that are suspended for a two-year probationary period, meaning Prestianni must avoid further similar incidents during that time.

With FIFA's extension, Prestianni could miss up to two World Cup matches if called up by Argentina. The 22-year-old has yet to earn a senior cap but is considered a prospect for the defending world champions.

The decision underscores FIFA's commitment to combating discrimination in football. The governing body has taken a firm stance against homophobic behavior, aligning with UEFA's initial punishment.

Prestianni's club, Benfica, has not publicly commented on the extension. However, the midfielder is expected to serve the remainder of his ban at the start of the next season, barring any appeal.
