Rodez, with the 16th budget in Ligue 2, rides a historic unbeaten streak into the playoffs against Red Star for a chance at Ligue 1 promotion.

Rodez heads to Stade Bauer on Tuesday night for a high-stakes playoff clash against Red Star, with a potential Ligue 1 berth on the line. The Ruthénois, who finished fifth in Ligue 2, are seeking to repeat last season's playoff run but go one step further after falling in the semifinals in 2024.

What makes Rodez's pursuit remarkable is their financial standing. With a budget of just €7.7 million—16th in Ligue 2—they operate on a fraction of what many of their rivals spend. By contrast, Amiens and Bastia, both recently relegated to Ligue 3, had budgets tailored for the upper half of the table. Rodez's success is built on cohesion and smart management rather than deep pockets.

The team enters the match on a historic unbeaten run. Since November 7, 2025, Rodez has not lost a single game across all competitions—a streak that extends into 2026. They are the only professional side among the 198 clubs in the top two divisions of Europe's five major leagues to remain undefeated this calendar year. That resilience has become their trademark.

This is not Rodez's first playoff rodeo. Last season, they reached the semifinals but fell 2-0 to Saint-Étienne. That experience, though painful, has provided valuable lessons. Manager general Grégory Ursule, who has been with the club since 2011, emphasized the importance of that learning.

"It's the second time, so we will use the experience already gained to add some ingredients to what could be a beautiful adventure," Ursule said, speaking alongside president Pierre-Olivier Murat and development director Guillaume Laurens. The quote captures the club's pragmatic optimism.

The leadership trio has been instrumental in Rodez's rise. Ursule handles day-to-day operations, Murat provides strategic vision, and Laurens drives growth. Their collaborative approach has kept the club stable despite limited resources.

Tuesday's opponent, Red Star, is no pushover. Playing at the narrow confines of Bauer, the Parisian side will have vocal support. Rodez, however, has shown they can thrive under pressure, especially with their unbeaten record giving them a psychological edge.

Promotion to Ligue 1 would be transformative for the club. Their home stadium, Paul-Lignon, holds just 6,761 seats—the smallest in the top flight. Facing stars like Ousmane Dembélé or Nuno Mendes would be a dream, but for now, the focus is on the immediate challenge.

The financial disparity between Rodez and Ligue 1 teams is vast, but the club has proven that smart player development and tactical discipline can level the playing field. A win against Red Star would set up a final playoff round against either Paris FC or another contender.

As kickoff approaches, the message from the Rodez camp is clear: they have the belief, the form, and the experience to make history. The streak may eventually end, but they hope it carries them all the way to the top flight.
