Nikolai Makarov, vice-president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation, has been granted neutral status by World Gymnastics after a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

In a significant development for Russian gymnastics, Nikolai Makarov, the vice-president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation (FGR), has been awarded a neutral status by the international governing body, World Gymnastics. This decision comes after a protracted legal and administrative process that began with an initial rejection.

The path to this status was not straightforward. Earlier in 2024, Makarov's application for neutral eligibility was denied by World Gymnastics. Undeterred, he pursued the matter further by filing an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the spring of that same year. The successful outcome of this appeal has now cleared the way for his recognition on the international stage.

Makarov's current role within the Russian federation is a relatively recent appointment. He officially took on the position of vice-president of the FGR on October 1, 2024. In this capacity, his specific area of responsibility is the trampoline gymnastics discipline, a field where he has deep roots.

Prior to his vice-presidential role, Makarov served as the president of the Russian Trampoline Federation. This background underscores his long-standing involvement and leadership within the sport at the national level, particularly in the trampoline sector.

The granting of neutral status to Makarov is part of a broader context. In February 2026, World Gymnastics approved a total of 10 Russian athletes and 7 members of coaching staff and support personnel to compete internationally under a neutral banner. This indicates a careful, case-by-case approach by the international federation regarding the participation of Russian officials and athletes.

The decision highlights the ongoing navigation of eligibility rules for Russian sports figures in the international arena. For Makarov, the neutral status allows him to engage with international gymnastics bodies and events in an official capacity, separate from his national federation role.
