World No. 21 Liudmila Samsonova secures a spot in the third round of the WTA 1000 event in Rome with a 6-4, 6-3 win over American Ann Li. She will face either Potapova or Muchova next.

Russia's Liudmila Samsonova, currently ranked 21st in the world, has successfully navigated her way into the Round of 16 at the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in Rome. She achieved this by defeating American player Ann Li in a match that lasted one hour and thirty-six minutes.

The match concluded with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-3 in favor of Samsonova. This victory marks a significant step for the Russian player in the Italian capital's clay-court event.

Looking at the match statistics, Samsonova's performance was solid. She recorded one ace during the contest but also committed three double faults. Crucially, she was highly effective on her break point opportunities, converting four out of the nine she created.

Her opponent, Ann Li, who is ranked 29th, put up a fight with two aces of her own and only two double faults. However, she struggled to capitalize on her chances, managing to convert just one of the break points she earned throughout the match.

With this win, Samsonova now sets her sights on the next round. Her opponent in the third round will be determined by the outcome of another match. She is scheduled to face the winner of the encounter between Austria's Anastasia Potapova and Czech player Karolina Muchova.

The tournament in Rome continues to be a key battleground on the clay-court season, and Samsonova's progression keeps her firmly in contention for a deep run at this major event.
