Russian forward Viktor Lakhin departs Cangrejeros de Santurce after a short-term deal. He will now pursue an NBA roster spot through Summer League and team

Russian forward Viktor Lakhin has officially parted ways with the Puerto Rican basketball club Cangrejeros de Santurce. The 24-year-old had been playing for the team since late March under a short-term contract.

The decision to end the agreement was made by the club's management, who opted not to extend Lakhin's stay. This move marks the end of his brief stint in the Puerto Rican league.

With his time in Puerto Rico concluded, Lakhin is now setting his sights back on the United States. His primary objective is to secure a permanent position in the NBA, and he plans to use the upcoming Summer League and various team training camps as his pathway.

This is not Lakhin's first attempt to break into the world's premier basketball league. He entered the 2025 NBA Draft but was not selected by any franchise. Following the draft, he was signed by the Oklahoma City Thunder to play for their G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue.

The G League stint provided him with valuable experience, but his ultimate goal remains the NBA. The Summer League is a critical showcase for players on the fringe, offering them a chance to impress scouts and coaching staffs in a competitive environment.

Lakhin's journey reflects the challenging path many international players face. Moving from a short-term contract in Puerto Rico to pursuing an NBA dream requires significant resilience and a willingness to constantly prove oneself in different settings.

The coming weeks will be crucial for the young forward as he navigates team camps and Summer League action. His performance will determine if he can finally earn that coveted NBA contract.
