Several other matches went the distance. Russia's Diana Shneider, seeded 19th, rallied after losing the first set to defeat Australia's Talia Gibson 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova, using a special ranking, outlasted Romania's Jaqueline Cristian in a marathon encounter that finished 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 6-4.

Other winners on the day included Russia's Liudmila Samsonova, who beat American Ann Li 6-4, 6-3, and Switzerland's Rebeka Masarova, a qualifier who upset Canada's Leylah Fernandez, the 25th seed, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Italy's Tyra Caterina Grant, a wildcard, fell to Czech Nikola Bartunkova 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.
