Teplice
FK Teplice, officially known as FK Teplice, is a Czech football club based in the spa city of Teplice, located in the Ústí nad Labem Region of northwestern Bohemia. Founded on June 1, 1945, in the aftermath of World War II, the club emerged from the merger of several local teams, including SK Teplice and DSV Teplitz, reflecting the region’s mixed Czech and German heritage. The club’s early years were marked by instability and name changes, but by the 1950s it established itself as a steady presence in Czechoslovak football. Teplice plays its home matches at the Stadion Na Stínadlech, a 17,833-capacity venue opened in 1973. The stadium, whose name means “on the threshing floors,” has undergone modern renovations and features an iconic arching roof over the main stand. The city of Teplice, famous for its thermal springs and spa culture, provides a picturesque backdrop for football in the Elbe River valley. The club’s greatest achievement came in the 1998–99 season when Teplice won its first and only Czech First League title under coach František Cerman, finishing three points ahead of rivals Slavia Prague. This championship secured a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, where they fell to Borussia Dortmund. Teplice has also won the Czech Cup twice: in 2003 (beating Jablonec 1–0) and 2009 (defeating Slovácko 1–0 in extra time). In European competitions, notable runs include reaching the UEFA Cup group stage in 2003–04 and the third qualifying round of the Europa League in 2011–12. Legendary players include striker Pavel Verbíř, the club’s all-time top scorer with over 100 goals in two separate spells; midfielder Radek Divecký, a key figure in the title-winning campaign; and goalkeeper Tomáš Poštulka, who was part of the 1999 championship team. More recently, defender Jan Krob and winger Jakub Hora have been fan favorites. The club is known for a disciplined, counter-attacking style of play, often relying on a solid defensive foundation and quick transitions, though this has evolved under different managers. Fan culture in Teplice is passionate but modest, with a core of loyal supporters known as “Bílí andělé” (White Angels) who create an atmospheric but family-friendly environment in the stadium’s north stand. The club’s major rivalry is with FK Jablonec, located just 60 km away in the Jizerské Mountains; the matches are known as the “North Bohemian Derby.” A more historic but less intense rivalry exists with FC Hradec Králové. Currently, FK Teplice competes in the Czech First League, often finishing in mid-table. The club has struggled to replicate its 1990s glory but remains a solid top-tier side, developing young talent through its academy. An interesting fact: Teplice was one of the first Czech clubs to introduce a formal fan zone and modern marketing strategies, helping it survive financial difficulties in the early 2000s. Despite the modest scale, the club’s resilience and connection to its spa town identity make it a cherished institution in Czech football.
