A 67-year-old man was killed by his brother with an axe during a fight over tree pruning in rural Maranhão. The suspect was also seriously injured and hospitalized.

A tragic family dispute in rural Maranhão ended in death and serious injury on Thursday morning. The incident occurred in the Areia dos Brancos locality, a rural area of Buriti municipality, located approximately 325 kilometers from the state capital, São Luís.

According to the Civil Police, the fatal confrontation began as an argument over the pruning of a tree on a piece of property. The disagreement quickly escalated into a violent physical altercation between two brothers.

The victim was identified as 67-year-old Manoel Alves de Sousa. He suffered fatal injuries after being struck multiple times with an axe during the fight. Manoel was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.

The suspect in the killing is his own brother, 58-year-old Antônio Alves de Sousa. The violent encounter was not one-sided, as Antônio also sustained severe injuries during the struggle.

Antônio Alves de Sousa received multiple wounds from a machete during the brawl. He was initially transported to the Municipal Hospital in Buriti for emergency treatment due to the critical nature of his condition.

Given the severity of his injuries, medical personnel decided to transfer Antônio to a high-complexity hospital facility in the city of Caxias. As of the latest reports, there is no updated information available regarding his current health status or prognosis.

The case is under investigation by local authorities. The tragic outcome highlights how seemingly minor property disputes can escalate into irreversible violence, leaving a family shattered by loss and injury.
