Two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff identifies grass as the most difficult surface for finding form, while clay and hard courts offer more consistency for the world No. 4.

World No. 4 Coco Gauff has offered a candid assessment of the different playing surfaces in professional tennis, pinpointing grass courts as the most challenging environment for building and maintaining competitive form.

The two-time Grand Slam champion shared her perspective during a recent press conference, breaking down the unique demands of grass, clay, and hard courts. Gauff explained that the brief grass-court season and compressed scheduling make it particularly difficult for players to establish any real rhythm or momentum.

"For me, grass has always been the hardest surface," Gauff stated. She elaborated that even when a player performs well in a tune-up event the week before a major, the quick turnaround presents significant obstacles. "If you're playing well, you win a tournament, but then you play the first round of a Slam two days later — that's tough," she noted.

The American star contrasted this with her experience on clay and hard courts, which she views as more similar in terms of building form. Gauff suggested that clay might have a slight edge for consistency, primarily because the clay-court calendar is less fragmented than the hard-court schedule.

"Usually if you're in form on clay, you're in form the whole time, whereas hard court can sometimes be intermittent," Gauff explained. This observation highlights how the structure of the tennis calendar itself plays a role in a player's ability to peak at the right moments throughout the season.

Gauff's comments come as the tennis world transitions between surfaces, with players constantly adapting their games to the varying speeds and bounces each surface offers. Her insights provide a window into the strategic and physical challenges elite athletes face when navigating the demanding professional tour schedule.
