Man City beat Crystal Palace 3-0 as Foden's creativity closes gap to leaders Arsenal to just two points with two games left, keeping the title pressure on.

Phil Foden delivered a creative masterclass as Manchester City cruised to a 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium, cutting the gap to Premier League leaders Arsenal to just two points with two games remaining. The England international set up the opening two goals, underlining his return to top form after a prolonged slump that had mirrored City’s own inconsistent recent displays.

Pep Guardiola made six changes from the previous win against Brentford, leaving Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Jérémy Doku on the bench and handing Josko Gvardiol his first start since early January after a broken leg. Palace manager Oliver Glasner also rotated heavily, with an eye on the upcoming Conference League final, introducing Yéremy Pino, Jefferson Lerma and Will Hughes. The reshuffled City initially looked disjointed, and the visitors sensed opportunity when Jean-Philippe Mateta had a goal disallowed for Brennan Johnson’s offside inside the opening minutes. Moments later, Will Hughes’ corner found Chris Richards unmarked, but his header sailed over the bar, and City had survived two early warnings.

The hosts lacked urgency until Foden conjured a moment of rare brilliance. Receiving a pass from Matheus Nunes with his back to goal, the midfielder flicked an instinctive backheel that split the Palace rearguard and released Antoine Semenyo. The forward made no mistake with a clinical strike past Dean Henderson, and Guardiola erupted with relief on the touchline. It was vindication for the manager’s team selection and a reminder of what City have missed during Foden’s long months without form.

City doubled their lead in the 38th minute, again with Foden pulling the strings. Rayan Aït-Nouri, deployed surprisingly on the left of a dual No.10 system, looped a cross from the right flank. Foden’s intelligent lay-off found Omar Marmoush, whose thunderous finish left Henderson helpless. The Egyptian’s third goal of the season showcased the growing understanding within a much-changed forward line, and at that point the contest was effectively over.

Palace’s threat evaporated after the second goal. Glasner’s side, already focused on the final in Europe, offered little in attack. Brennan Johnson’s runs down the left remained the only flicker of danger, but City’s backline, marshalled by the returning Gvardiol, held firm. Gianluigi Donnarumma was largely untroubled, required only to gather a tame Sarr effort late on.

The second half was a procession. Gvardiol almost connected with another Foden delivery for a headed goal, only for Henderson to produce a stunning tip-over. Savinho wrapped up the scoring in the 84th minute, finishing from close range after a slick move involving substitute Jérémy Doku. Guardiola used the closing stages to rest legs, bringing on Nathan Aké, Doku, Cherki, Mateo Kovacic and John Stones, with the FA Cup final against Chelsea only days away.

Foden’s performance was a jolting statement. After a mystifying dip in effectiveness this season, the 25-year-old showed the vision, weight of pass and selflessness that have long drawn comparisons to the game’s elite playmakers. His backheel and lay-off were vintage touches, and the Etihad crowd responded with roars of approval. If this is a genuine return to form, City’s run-in gains a formidable weapon.

The win lifts City to 82 points, two behind Arsenal with the same number of games played. Arsenal host already-relegated Burnley on Monday, a mismatch on paper, before a final-day trip to Selhurst Park. City, meanwhile, face Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday and then must win their final league match, hoping Palace produce a shock at the Emirates. The title race, which looked dead weeks ago, now pulses with uncertainty.

For Palace, the defeat is a minor blip in a season of solid progress. Securing a top-half finish and reaching a European final represents a successful campaign, and Glasner will not lose sleep over this defeat. The match highlighted the depth gap between the leagues’ elite and the rest, especially when rotation is required. Palace’s bench simply could not match the game-changers City introduced.

Guardiola, while refusing to concede the title, acknowledged that his side can only focus on their own results. The equation is brutal: win out and pray for a slip. With Arsenal hosting a Burnley side already relegated, the weight of expectation is squarely on the Gunners, but their perfect home record this season suggests they will not falter easily. City’s best chance may arrive on the final day if Palace, with nothing to lose, can conjure a shock at the Emirates.

In the end, this was a night to celebrate Foden’s artistry. From his backheel to the constant probing passes, he was the difference. If City are to pull off an against-the-odds title heist, they will need him to sustain this level. For now, the dream is alive, however faintly. Based on reporting from The Guardian.
