Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné discusses his relationship with former OM coach Roberto De Zerbi, revealing a recent warm reunion in London after a public training ground incident.

Ismaël Koné has opened up about his relationship with Roberto De Zerbi, offering a surprising and conciliatory perspective on their well-documented clash at Olympique de Marseille. The Canadian international, now thriving at Sassuolo, insists he harbors no ill will towards the Italian manager, who is currently at the helm of Tottenham Hotspur.

The tension between the two became public knowledge following an altercation during a training session, footage of which was later included in an official OM video series. This incident was widely seen as a turning point in Koné's difficult spell at the French club. However, Koné frames the event differently, describing it as a simple disagreement born from conflicting football philosophies.

"We are two people who love football, but with two different visions," Koné explained in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. He elaborated on the specific tactical disagreement, stating, "He wants one or two touches in midfield, but I need a bit of freedom. I want to seek out the play. He knew that, but on that day, he got angry." Koné acknowledges he could have avoided responding back, but views the episode as a common occurrence in the high-pressure environment of professional football.

This candid admission contrasts sharply with the stance of Jesse Marsch, Koné's national team coach with Canada. Marsch had previously labeled De Zerbi a "real jerk" in his handling of the player at Marseille. Koné's own account is far more measured, focusing on mutual respect and differing styles rather than personal animosity.

Koné's time at OM was brief and challenging. Recruited from Watford in the summer of 2024, he managed only nine appearances before being loaned out. His first destination was Rennes in February 2025, followed by a move to Italian side Sassuolo. It is in Serie A where the 22-year-old has found his form, making 32 league appearances and scoring six goals, a resurgence that has put him firmly in contention for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Despite the rocky ending in Marseille, Koné speaks positively of his overall experience in the city. He credits the "warmth of the supporters" and describes it as a "beautiful experience," though he concedes things "didn't go as planned" from a sporting perspective. He also subtly questions the club's decision to publicly release the training ground footage, suggesting it amplified a private moment.

The most telling detail of their repaired relationship came during a chance encounter. Koné revealed that a few weeks prior to the interview, he traveled to London with two teammates and met with De Zerbi. "I met Roberto and he hugged me very tightly," Koné shared. "We talked about everything, as if nothing had ever happened. Sometimes social media and the media amplify everything."

This reunion is particularly noteworthy given De Zerbi's current position at Tottenham Hotspur. While Koné did not speculate about a potential future collaboration, the warm interaction leaves the door open. For now, the midfielder is focused on his successful stint in Italy and the prospect of representing Canada on the world's biggest stage this summer.

The story highlights the complex dynamics between players and managers, where public conflicts can mask underlying professional respect. Koné's willingness to forgive and move forward demonstrates a maturity beyond his years, focusing on his own growth and the positive aspects of his journey through European football.
