Lille manager Bruno Genesio calls Saturday's Monaco match decisive for Champions League after team's stunning 11-point turnaround since February.

Lille manager Bruno Genesio has underlined the importance of Saturday's Ligue 1 clash against Monaco, calling it a 'couperet' match in the race for Champions League qualification. Speaking in the pre-match press conference, Genesio highlighted the remarkable form of both sides, with Monaco collecting 30 points in the last 13 matches and Lille not far behind with 26. He acknowledged Monaco's quality, despite recent dropped points, and stressed that the final two games carry extra weight.

'When you enter the last two matches, you know that points don't count double but are much more important,' Genesio said. 'It's going to be a decisive match for them and for us, if we consider that the objective is to qualify for the Champions League.' The match at Stade Louis-II pits two of the league's in-form teams against each other, with both aiming to secure a top-three finish.

Genesio also addressed the support for winger Felix Correia, who was jeered by Lille fans at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy last week. The manager revealed he spoke personally with the player, using improving English. 'He was affected, obviously, but he is mentally strong,' Genesio said. 'He has great clarity about his qualities and what he needs to improve. He has a mental strength that can withstand anything.' He emphasised the unity shown by the squad, which he believes is a key factor in Lille's current position.

Reflecting on Lille's recovery from an 11-point deficit on the podium in February, Genesio admitted he did not imagine being in this situation two games from the end. 'I felt we were capable of getting back up, even if I didn't imagine that we could, with two days to go, be in this situation,' he said. 'I remind the players regularly: Remember where we come from, remember late January. If our season ends with qualification for the Champions League, it will be extraordinary. I say extraordinary. If it ends with qualification for the Europa League, it will be a very good season.'

The Lille boss praised the team's spirit and resilience, crediting the collective mindset for their surge up the table. 'We have a lot of quality in the squad, but I think we are where we are today because of that spirit—that solidarity, that desire to do things together,' Genesio added. 'Sometimes well, sometimes less well. You cannot have results without that. It is necessary and indispensable.'

With two matches remaining, Lille's fate is in their own hands. A win against Monaco would put them in a strong position to secure a top-three finish and a coveted Champions League spot. The match promises to be a tense affair, with both teams aware that every point could be the difference between success and disappointment.
