Over 310,000 taxpayers in Maranhão have not filed their 2026 income tax returns. With the deadline just weeks away, they face potential fines from the Receita

The clock is ticking for hundreds of thousands of taxpayers in Maranhão. With just over three weeks remaining until the deadline for the 2026 Income Tax declaration, a significant portion of the population has yet to file their returns, putting them at risk of financial penalties.

According to data from Brazil's Receita Federal, only 337,335 declarations have been submitted in the state so far. This figure represents roughly half of the 641,865 returns filed during the same period in 2025, indicating a major slowdown in compliance this year.

The federal tax authority expects to receive approximately 648,000 declarations from Maranhão for the 2026 fiscal year. This means that around 310,665 taxpayers, or nearly 48% of the expected total, still need to complete their filings before the window closes.

Among those who have already submitted their paperwork, a clear preference for modern tools is evident. A substantial 64.6% of filers opted for the pre-filled declaration system, which automatically populates the form with known fiscal data, streamlining the process.

The method of submission also shows a digital trend. The majority, 73.5%, used the official Receita Federal desktop program. The mobile app accounted for 8.1% of filings, while 18.5% of taxpayers completed the process online via the agency's portal.

For many, the effort is financially rewarding. The data reveals that 74.5% of the contributors who have already filed are entitled to a tax refund. However, for those who miss the impending deadline, the outcome could be the opposite—a fine for late submission.
