Corsican football faces a historic void next season. For the first time in over 60 years, not a single club from the island will compete in France's top two divisions. The confirmation came on Saturday evening as SC Bastia's relegation was sealed following a 2-0 defeat to Le Mans at Stade Armand-Cesari in Furiani.

The match was interrupted in the final minutes after smoke bombs were thrown onto the pitch by Bastia supporters. At that point, Le Mans held a comfortable 2-0 lead, and the result stood. The loss means Bastia will drop to Ligue 3 (currently known as National) for the 2026-2027 campaign.

This marks the end of an era for Corsican football. The last time no Corsican team featured in Ligue 1 or Ligue 2 was the 1964-1965 season. That year, SC Bastia (founded in 1921) and AC Ajaccio (founded in 1910) earned promotion to Division 2 the following season, beginning a long-standing presence. Later, Gazélec Ajaccio, founded in 1960, joined the professional ranks and reached Division 2 for the first time in 1968-1969.

Bastia's relegation leaves Corsica without a representative in the professional ranks. AC Ajaccio and Gazélec Ajaccio have also struggled in recent years and failed to achieve promotion. The island's passionate football community now faces a painful reset in the third tier.

The match itself was tense. Le Mans dominated proceedings and built a two-goal advantage. As the clock ticked down, frustration boiled over among Bastia fans, leading to the smoke bomb incident. Referee officials decided to halt the game with minutes remaining, effectively confirming the result.

For Bastia, this marks a dramatic fall from grace. The club has a rich history, including a memorable run to the UEFA Cup final in 1978 and a Coupe de France title in 1981. They have yo-yoed between divisions in recent decades, but this relegation cuts deeper because it erases Corsica's presence from the top two flights entirely.

Looking ahead, Bastia will aim to rebuild in Ligue 3 and fight for an immediate return. AC Ajaccio and Gazélec Ajaccio will also be watching closely, hoping to join the fight for promotion. But for now, the 2026-2027 season will be a somber one for Corsican football, with no local derby in the professional leagues.
