First cold wave of 2026 hits Piracicaba region with temperatures dropping to 9°C, winds up to 70 km/h, and heavy rain warnings for Mother's Day weekend.

The Piracicaba region in São Paulo is bracing for a significant weather shift as the first cold wave of 2026 arrives this Mother's Day weekend. According to the São Paulo State Civil Defense, a approaching cold front followed by a polar air mass will bring a sharp drop in temperatures, strong winds, and rainfall between Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10.

Wind gusts are expected to reach between 50 and 70 kilometers per hour starting Friday, May 8. While winds will lose some intensity on Saturday, the cold front will begin advancing through the state. Saturday will still see maximum temperatures above 30°C in Piracicaba, but a dramatic change is forecast for Sunday.

On Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10, minimum temperatures are predicted to drop to around 9°C, with thermometers not exceeding 22°C. The cold will intensify further on Monday, May 11, with minimums reaching 7°C in the city. This represents a temperature swing of over 20 degrees from Friday's highs.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued a yellow danger alert for potential severe weather, including heavy rain and strong winds, covering all 18 cities in the g1 Piracicaba coverage area. This alert remains in effect until the end of Friday.

Civil Defense authorities are urging residents to take precautions during the weather event. Key advice includes avoiding standing under trees during wind gusts, not parking vehicles near trees, poles, or fragile metal structures, and seeking shelter indoors during storms. Residents are also warned never to attempt crossing flooded areas.

With the sharp temperature drop, special attention should be given to children, the elderly, and those in vulnerable situations. Domestic animals also need protection from the intense cold. For those using heaters, maintaining proper room ventilation is essential to prevent accidents.

The Civil Defense reinforces that the population can receive free alerts directly on their mobile phones by sending their home zip code via SMS to the number 40199. In case of emergency, residents should contact the Civil Defense (199), Fire Department (193), or Military Police (190).
