A 43-year-old truck driver was arrested in Uberlândia after police found his trailer's plates covered with black electrical tape to evade weigh stations

A routine highway operation in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, led to the arrest of a truck driver who attempted to deceive official inspections. The 43-year-old man was apprehended on Thursday, May 7th, while driving a cargo trailer on the MGC-497 highway.

Officers from the Military Highway Police (PMRv) noticed something unusual about the vehicle's identification. During their inspection at kilometer 14 of the road, they discovered that the license plates of the cargo combination vehicle (CVC) were partially obscured. Black electrical tape had been applied to the plates, making it difficult to read the vehicle's official registration numbers.

Upon further questioning, the driver confessed to the officers. He admitted that the purpose of tampering with the plates was specifically to bypass the automated systems at roadside weighing stations. These stations use camera technology to identify and log vehicles, and covering the plates was his method of avoiding detection for potential weight violations.

The investigation did not stop at the tampered plates. A thorough vehicle inspection revealed additional irregularities with the truck's other identifying signals and markers. At the time of the stop, the trailer was loaded with a cargo of flour, a common commodity transported on Brazilian highways.

As a result of the findings, the driver was arrested on the spot. The charge filed against him is the adulteration of a motor vehicle's identification signal, a serious criminal offense under Brazilian law. He was subsequently taken to the on-duty Police Civil station for formal processing.

The cargo trailer itself was not released. It was officially seized by the authorities and towed to a designated impound yard, where it will remain as part of the legal proceedings. The vehicle will likely undergo a more detailed forensic examination.

This type of crime is explicitly addressed in the Brazilian Penal Code. Article 311 defines the adulteration, concealment, or alteration of license plates and other vehicle identification marks without authorization. The legal consequences are severe, with a prison sentence ranging from three to six years, in addition to a monetary fine.

The incident highlights the ongoing efforts by highway police to enforce transportation regulations and ensure the safety and legality of cargo movement across the country's road network. Based on reporting from g1.
