Lijabatho Football Club, based in the heart of Maseru, Lesotho, is one of the most storied institutions in Southern African football. Founded in 1964 by a group of Basotho educators and community leaders, the club’s name means “the people” in Sesotho, reflecting its deep grassroots origins and commitment to representing the working-class districts of the capital. From humble beginnings playing on dusty fields near the Thamae area, Lijabatho grew into a powerhouse of Lesotho football, earning the nickname *Batho ba Khanya* (“The People’s Light”). The team calls Setsoto Stadium home, a 20,000‑capacity venue located in the city centre. Despite its modest size, the stadium thunders with the sound of brass bands and vuvuzelas on matchdays, especially during derbies. The club’s colours – green and white – symbolise the lush highlands of Lesotho and the purity of fair play. Lijabatho have won the Lesotho Premier League title seven times (most recently in 2019), and have lifted the Lesotho FA Cup on five occasions. Domestically, they are perennial challengers, though they have struggled to replicate their league dominance in the CAF Champions League, where they reached the first round in 2020 but were eliminated by an Egyptian side. Their most memorable continental moment came in 2015 when they held reigning champions TP Mazembe to a 1–1 draw in Maseru. The club’s golden era was the early 2000s under coach Mohlomi Mohapi. Legendary striker Thapelo Mokhele scored 98 league goals between 2002 and 2008, cementing his status as a club icon. Midfielder ‘Mamello “Maestro” Khalo, known for his vision and set‑piece precision, captained Lijabatho to three league titles before moving to South Africa. More recently, defender Rethabile Rasethuntša, a local academy product, earned Lesotho’s Player of the Year honours in 2021. Lijabatho play a high‑energy, direct style built on physical pressing and quick transitions. Their identity is rooted in resilience – a reflection of Basotho culture. Fans, organised into the *Batho Supporters’ Trust*, create a cauldron of noise with traditional chants and *famo* music, often waving green‑and‑white flags shaped like the Maluti Mountains. The club’s fiercest rivalry is with Matlama FC – the “Maseru Derby” – which dates back to a 1972 league playoff. Matches are tense, frequently marred by red cards, but unite the city in colourful, boisterous celebration. Another rivalry exists with Bantu FC, based in Mafeteng, driven by regional pride. Currently, Lijabatho sits mid‑table in the 2024 Lesotho Premier League, undergoing a rebuilding phase after the departure of its star striker to Mauritius. However, the youth academy – one of the country’s best – continues producing talent. Interesting fact: the club’s founding president, Tebello Motaung, was a schoolteacher who initially used chalkboard tactics to coach players after hours. That same chalkboard is preserved in the club museum. Lijabatho remain a symbol of community and perseverance, embodying the spirit of “the people” they were named for.
