Police arrested five suspects in Campina Grande for a real estate fraud scheme that allegedly caused over R$1.2 million in losses to 21 victims since 2020.

A coordinated police operation in the Brazilian state of Paraíba has resulted in the arrest of five individuals suspected of running a sophisticated real estate fraud scheme. The arrests were made on Friday in the cities of Campina Grande, Bayeux, and Itapororoca as part of a long-running investigation.

According to the Civil Police, the group had been under investigation since 2020. Their alleged method involved identifying properties that were in the process of being auctioned. They would then obtain detailed property certificates, known as "certidões de inteiro teor," which contain information about a property but do not legally prove ownership.

Using these documents, the suspects allegedly created a false sense of legitimacy to conduct fraudulent property sales. This scheme reportedly caused financial damages exceeding R$1.2 million to the victims involved.

The operation, named "Operação Arremate," executed arrest warrants across the three municipalities. During the action, authorities also seized electronic devices. These items will undergo forensic analysis to potentially identify other individuals who may have been involved in the criminal network.

The investigation has so far identified 21 people who fell victim to the alleged fraud. In response to the significant financial harm caused, the judiciary has ordered a freeze on R$700,000 in financial assets. This measure is intended to provide partial restitution to the affected parties.

The Civil Police have indicated that this may not be the final phase of their action. The possibility of a second phase of the operation has not been ruled out, suggesting that further arrests or seizures could be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
