Man City's Rayan Cherki discusses adapting to Pep Guardiola's demands, his 15 goal involvements this season, and his mission to keep football romantic and fun.

In his debut Premier League season, Manchester City midfielder Rayan Cherki has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting and talked-about players in English football. The French international has combined flair with end product, ranking second only to Erling Haaland for goal contributions at the club this term with 15 involvements.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the 22-year-old opened up about his philosophy and his relationship with manager Pep Guardiola. Cherki embraces the label of a 'maverick,' a tag given to him by pundits like Jamie Carragher. He believes there is still room in the modern, often rigid tactical landscape for players who prioritize creativity and entertainment.

"Today, people who come to the stadium, more and more they want to see players who create a lot of things," Cherki explained. "If today, I think about doing a backheel, or a Rabona, a sombrero flick or a shot from distance, that allows me to be what I want to be."

The former Lyon star is adamant that players should not shy away from attempting the spectacular. "You shouldn't refrain from it, try it. Because in football today, you're not going to succeed at everything. But if you try, you're more likely to succeed rather than just talk about it," he stated.

Cherki's desire extends beyond personal expression; he wants to ensure the sport remains a source of passion and emotion for fans. "I don't want football to become a normal sport, or that it's less watched. I want people who are less passionate about football to say themselves that it's a sport that brings a lot of emotions," he said. "It's a sport that allows you to forget the problems."

While his attacking instincts are his hallmark, Cherki has also had to adapt to the defensive responsibilities demanded by Guardiola's system. He acknowledges that this aspect of the game is also part of the fun, praising teammates like Abdukodir Khusanov and Marc Guehi for their extraordinary recoveries and tackles. "It's also a form of art, it's also a way of loving football," he remarked.

Ultimately, Cherki sees himself as a football romantic, a identity he is committed to maintaining. "Football is my whole life, and being a football romantic is part of me. I'm not going to stop being that," he affirmed. His blend of artistry and effectiveness has been a bright spot in City's season as they prepare for their upcoming match against Brentford.
