Novak Djokovic was defeated 2-6 6-2 6-4 by 20-year-old Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic in his return from a shoulder injury at the Italian Open.

Novak Djokovic's return to competitive tennis after a two-month injury layoff ended in a stunning defeat at the Italian Open in Rome. The 38-year-old Serbian star, a six-time champion at the tournament, was beaten 2-6 6-2 6-4 by 20-year-old Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic, who is 18 years his junior.

The match marked Djokovic's first appearance on court since his fourth-round loss to Britain's Jack Draper at Indian Wells in March. He had been sidelined with a shoulder injury, and taping was visible on his right shoulder during the contest. Djokovic, the record 24-time Grand Slam champion, started strongly by taking the opening set but appeared to struggle physically as the match progressed.

Prizmic, who grew up idolizing Djokovic, showed remarkable composure to battle back and secure the biggest victory of his young career. "He's my idol," Prizmic said after the match. "I just played unbelievably today." The young Croatian's performance was a major upset, eliminating one of the tournament's most decorated champions.

In his post-match press conference, Djokovic chose not to elaborate on his physical condition. "I hope you understand I will not talk about that," he stated. "I want to congratulate Dino, deservedly the winner today." He did, however, offer an honest assessment of his current form, acknowledging he is not yet at the level required to compete with the sport's best.

"Obviously I see what I'm missing. Late half a step," Djokovic explained. "I'm not definitely where I want to be for the highest level and to compete at the highest level and to be able to get far." His focus now shifts to the upcoming French Open, the second Grand Slam of the season, which begins on May 24.

When asked about his confidence in being fully fit for Roland Garros, Djokovic was noncommittal, replying simply: "I don't know. I hope so." In his only other tournament this year, he reached the Australian Open final before losing to Carlos Alcaraz.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, second seed Alexander Zverev recovered from his loss to Jannik Sinner in the Madrid Open final by defeating fellow German Daniel Altmaier 7-5 6-3. Sixth seed Alex De Minaur was also eliminated, falling 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 to Italian Matteo Arnaldi.
