Pre-inquest hearing hears family claims Burnley's treatment of former Liverpool manager Matt Beard contributed to his mental health decline before his death in 2025.

The family of former Liverpool manager Matt Beard has alleged that he was subjected to bullying by Burnley Football Club in the period leading up to his death. These claims were presented during a pre-inquest hearing, where his loved ones described his brief tenure at Burnley as a critical factor in his deteriorating mental health.

Beard, a highly respected figure in women's football, had a distinguished career that included guiding Liverpool to consecutive Women's Super League titles in 2013 and 2014. He also had managerial spells at Chelsea and West Ham. His final professional role was at Burnley, where he was appointed in June 2025 but resigned just two months later in August 2025.

The hearing was told that Beard's departure from Burnley was not a move to another position but a direct result of his unhappiness at the club. His wife, Debbie Beard, stated that the club did not allow him to move on and that she felt they had bullied him. This sentiment was echoed by his stepson, Scott Beard, who raised concerns about the timing of social media posts he described as damaging to the manager's reputation.

Tragically, Matt Beard passed away on 20 September 2025 at the age of 47, just over three weeks after leaving Burnley. The cause of death was recorded as a hypoxic brain injury, as confirmed during the hearing at Ruthin County Court.

The senior coroner, John Gittins, announced that Burnley would be invited to become an interested person in the ongoing legal proceedings. Furthermore, the coroner indicated he would be seeking additional evidence from the League Managers Association (LMA), an organization Beard had reportedly consulted regarding his concerns about his treatment at Burnley.

In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Burnley FC acknowledged the ongoing legal process but declined to comment further. The club recently celebrated promotion to the second tier of English women's football.

A significant and poignant element of the hearing was the family's request to play a video recording made by Beard shortly before his death. His wife emphasized that Matt had left the video intentionally, wanting it to be found and for his voice to be heard. This underscores the family's desire for a full and transparent examination of the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Matt Beard's legacy in the sport was formally recognized posthumously when he was inducted into the WSL Hall of Fame in April 2026. He had been managing Liverpool in a second spell until February 2025, just months before his final role at Burnley.
