In an unusual incident that disrupted daily life for millions, a horse fell into a critical water main in the Paraíso neighborhood of Belo Horizonte's East Region. The animal stepped on a pipeline cover and plunged into the system, triggering a major interruption in the water supply across a vast area.
The accident impacted 715 neighborhoods within the capital city itself, along with seven other municipalities in the Greater Belo Horizonte region. According to estimates from the water utility company Copasa, the incident affected roughly half of the population in the metropolitan area. The scale of the disruption was due to the interconnected nature of the water distribution network, which required a complete shutdown as a precaution against potential contamination.
The water main, known as an adutora, is a high-pressure pipeline responsible for transporting water from its source to treatment facilities. In this case, the water is captured from the Rio das Velhas in Nova Lima, about 12 kilometers in a straight line from the accident site. From there, it travels to a treatment plant where it undergoes cleaning, chemical treatment, filtration, and quality analysis before reaching consumers.
After the horse was located deceased and removed from the São Lucas Sul pipeline in the Taquaril neighborhood, Copasa initiated a thorough response. All water in the affected section was discarded and will not be used for consumption. The company then began a comprehensive process of cleaning, chemical disinfection, and laboratory testing to ensure the water meets safety standards before supply is restored.
Operations to restore the water supply began around 8 a.m., but the recovery is gradual due to the enormous area impacted. Ronaldo Serpa, the superintendent of operations for the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region, stated that the system started functioning at that time, but the return of service will be phased in progressively. He noted that restoration in higher or more distant regions may extend until Thursday.
Copasa confirmed that no abnormalities were detected in the water quality following the incident. The company emphasized that the precautionary shutdown was necessary while precise information about how long the animal was in the pipeline, its path, and the possibility of contamination were unknown. The integrated system design means a problem at one strategic point can affect residents many kilometers away.
The municipalities affected include Belo Horizonte, Contagem, Nova Lima, Raposos, Ribeirão das Neves, Sabará, Santa Luzia, and Vespasiano. Hundreds of neighborhoods across Greater BH experienced the disruption, highlighting the vulnerability of large-scale infrastructure to unexpected events.
