Scienza recalls Bundesliga play-off goal as he leads Southampton's promotion push against Middlesbrough in Championship semi-final second leg.

Leo Scienza has been one of the driving forces behind Southampton's remarkable second half of the season. With 17 Championship goal contributions and 10 since the Saints' unbeaten run began in January, the Brazilian winger has turned his late-blooming career into a fairy tale. Now, just two games away from the Premier League, he draws inspiration from a similar high-stakes moment last season.

Scienza's journey to English football is anything but conventional. He only started playing professionally six years ago, having spent his late teens playing Sunday league in his native Brazil. "I was playing in Sunday league with normal people that have normal jobs," he recalled. "After the game, you drink some beer, have some fun, eat some churrasco."

A pivotal moment changed everything. The death of his father on his birthday pushed Scienza to pursue football full-time. "It was very hard for me, with my dad passing away on my birthday," he told Sky Sports. "It made me feel like I had nothing to lose." He moved to Sweden, living in simple conditions, and from there caught the eye of Schalke in Germany, beginning a five-year journey through the lower leagues.

His breakthrough came at Heidenheim, where he showcased his talent in the Bundesliga. Last season, he scored nine goals and provided six assists in all competitions, including a dramatic play-off goal in the Bundesliga relegation play-off. That moment of ecstasy remains vivid. "The play-off goal in Germany was pure ecstasy," he said. "I want that with Southampton."

Southampton snapped him up in the dying minutes of the summer 2025 transfer window. Despite doubts about his style suiting the Championship, Scienza has hit the ground running. "Before I came here, I would say my style doesn't fit the Championship. Everyone said this will not work," he admitted. "When your coach wants to use your best qualities, it's easier to understand where the space is."

The Saints face Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off semi-final second leg on Tuesday, live on Sky Sports. A win would send them to the final at Wembley, with promotion to the Premier League on the line. For Scienza, it's a chance to replicate the joy he felt in Germany and transform Southampton's fortunes.

His story resonates beyond the pitch. From Sunday league in Brazil to the brink of England's top flight, Scienza embodies perseverance. "It's been crazy the last few years," he reflected. "I'm 27, playing my sixth season in professional football, and today I'm in the Championship at this big club. Every day has been a dream."

For Southampton, Scienza's form could be the difference. His ability to drive forward and create chances has been crucial during their unbeaten run. Manager Russell Martin has harnessed his talents, and the team now stands on the cusp of a return to the Premier League after relegation last season. The play-offs represent redemption — not just for the club, but for a player whose journey defies all odds.

As Tuesday night approaches, all eyes will be on Scienza. Can he channel the same magic that saw Heidenheim survive relegation? If his words are any indication, he is ready. "I want to feel that ecstasy again," he said. "This is what I've been working for."
