Rennes will be without first-choice goalkeeper Brice Samba for their pivotal final Ligue 1 match against Marseille after his fifth yellow card of the season was upheld on appeal.

Rennes faces a significant challenge for their final Ligue 1 fixture of the season, a match with major European implications against Marseille on May 17th. The club will have to navigate this crucial encounter without their first-choice goalkeeper, Brice Samba, after a disciplinary decision was upheld.

The suspension stems from a yellow card Samba received during his team's recent 2-4 defeat away to Lyon. The booking was his fifth of the campaign, triggering an automatic one-match ban. The incident in question occurred during the build-up to Lyon's second goal, where forward Afonso Moreira was dispossessed in the box. Referee M. Turpin judged that Samba had contributed to the attacker's fall, though the decision was contentious as teammate Mousa al-Tamari also made contact with Moreira.

Rennes lodged an official appeal with the disciplinary commission, seeking to have the yellow card rescinded. However, the club's efforts proved unsuccessful, as the commission chose not to alter the referee's original decision. This outcome was somewhat anticipated, as manager Franck Haise had been informed by the official post-match that the decision was final due to the involvement of two separate contacts.

Samba himself expressed his frustration with the ruling, believing the referee took the easier option by penalizing the goalkeeper. He maintained that he did not make meaningful contact with the Lyon forward and felt the situation was unclear, especially after the official initially pointed to al-Tamari's challenge as the primary foul.

With Samba unavailable, the responsibility will fall to 20-year-old backup Mathys Silistrie. The young keeper, who is under contract until 2029, is set to make his third senior start for the club. His previous appearances this season came in a Coupe de France victory over lower-league opposition and a league loss to Lens back in February.

Silistrie's performance in that 1-3 defeat at Lens was not without scrutiny. While he could do little about the opening goal, he was beaten by a shot from Allan Saint-Maximin that was described as tricky but ultimately saveable, a goal that effectively decided the match. He was promoted to the number two role at the start of the season by former coach Habib Beye following the departure of veteran Steve Mandanda.

The young goalkeeper shares a developmental pathway with several notable Rennes academy graduates, having also passed through Évreux before joining the club's youth system. He is part of the same 2005 generation that produced exciting talents like Désiré Doué, Mathys Tel, and Jérémy Jacquet. Now, he faces the daunting task of guarding the net in what promises to be a high-stakes season finale at the Vélodrome.
