Brazilian artist Seu Jorge releases 'The Other Side,' an album conceived in 2009 and delayed by the pandemic and his life in the USA. It features 11 tracks with a 1960s-70s Brazilian sound, recorded entirely in Los Angeles.

After a creative journey spanning more than a decade and a half, Brazilian musician Seu Jorge has officially released his new album, 'The Other Side.' The project, which he describes as his most personal work to date, first came to life in 2009 and was completed in 2019, but its release was postponed until now due to a combination of factors including the global pandemic, his relocation to the United States, and other professional commitments.

The album comprises 11 tracks that showcase a deep dive into a Brazilian sonic palette reminiscent of the 1960s and 1970s. It blends elements of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) with the rhythmic flair of samba-rock. Notably, the entire production took place in Los Angeles, California, where Seu Jorge has been living with his family. The record features collaborations with renowned artists like Marisa Monte and Maria Rita, and includes re-recordings of songs by Milton Nascimento and Arthur Verocai.

Seu Jorge explains that the album's creation was a meticulous process, developed through extensive conversations with the participating musicians and producers, particularly Mario Caldato Jr., who owns the studio where the project was realized. He worked on it intermittently, allowing inspiration to guide the development of its unique identity. The artist emphasizes that this album is an exploration of his own sound intertwined with a broader Brazilian musical heritage.

The delay in release was intentional. After the album was ready in 2019, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic made Seu Jorge hesitant to launch it without proper promotion and connection with his audience. He waited an additional six years until he felt the timing was right to present this distinct body of work, which differs significantly from his more recent, electronically-infused album 'Baile à la Baiana.'

With a focus on the international audience, particularly Brazilians living abroad, Seu Jorge views the album as a form of cultural diplomacy. He recorded Brazilian music in the USA with an American production approach, aiming to create a bridge and expand the perception of Brazilian culture globally. He is confident that 'The Other Side' is his best work in terms of musical care, time invested, and sincerity, noting it was made for artistic beauty rather than commercial radio play.

Looking ahead, the artist has expressed a desire to return to his roots by creating a dedicated samba album, a genre he feels deeply connected to through his family lineage. While his previous works have incorporated samba elements, he envisions a future project that is purely samba in essence, produced with top-tier collaborators and capturing the genre's authentic sound.
