Olympique Lyonnais has confirmed a significant blow to their squad for the remainder of the 2025-2026 Ligue 1 campaign. American midfielder Tanner Tessmann will miss the final stretch of the season due to a muscular injury, manager Paulo Fonseca announced during a press conference on Friday.

The 24-year-old, who has been a key figure in Lyon's midfield this season, was already absent from the squad for the previous weekend's convincing 4-2 victory over Stade Rennais. Fonseca's update confirms the worst fears regarding the player's availability, stating Tessmann would be sidelined "until the end of the season."

Tessmann's absence creates a substantial void in the heart of the Lyon team. Since joining from Venezia, the American international has established himself as a regular starter, making 29 appearances across all competitions this season, with 22 of those coming from the beginning of the match. His contribution of one goal, while modest, does not fully reflect his importance to the team's structure and balance in the middle of the park.

The timing of this injury is particularly unfortunate for both club and player. For Lyon, it deprives Fonseca of a reliable option during a critical phase of the season as the team looks to secure its league position. For Tessmann personally, the injury raises questions about his fitness for a major upcoming international commitment. The midfielder is slated to represent the United States at the FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19. His club contract with Lyon runs until 2029, indicating the long-term faith the French club has placed in him.

"We have only Orel who did the warm-up with us and I think tomorrow (Saturday) he will do the full session," Fonseca was quoted as saying, providing a glimmer of hope regarding another midfield option. Belgian international Orel Mangala, who has been dealing with a left thigh issue, participated in the pre-training warm-up and could potentially be in contention for the upcoming match against Toulouse on Sunday evening. However, his inclusion in the matchday squad remains uncertain.

The manager's comments also hinted at a potential return for another player who has been on the sidelines. "All the others are ready," Fonseca stated, a remark that suggests defender Rémi Humbert might be available after a two-month absence. Humbert has been recovering from a right ankle injury, and his potential return would provide a welcome boost to the defensive options.

The injury to Tessmann forces a tactical reassessment for Fonseca. The American's physical presence and ability to cover ground have been assets in Lyon's system. His absence will likely see increased responsibility fall on the shoulders of other midfielders in the squad, with Mangala's potential return becoming even more crucial if he can prove his fitness.

As Lyon prepares for their trip to face Toulouse on Sunday at 21:00, the focus will be on how the team adapts without one of its most consistent performers. The match represents an opportunity for other players to step up and fill the void left by Tessmann's injury, as the season enters its decisive phase.
