Real Madrid's Federico Valverde suffered a traumatic brain injury after a punch from Aurélien Tchouaméni, ending his season and exposing deep locker room

Real Madrid's locker room has hit rock bottom after a violent altercation between midfielders Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde on Thursday. Sources inside the club described the incident as a "very serious event" and "unprecedented" in the club's history. The fight left Valverde with a traumatic brain injury after he fell following a punch thrown by Tchouaméni.

Medical tests confirmed the Uruguayan international suffered a cranial trauma, requiring a rest period of 10 to 14 days. His season with the club effectively ends, as he will miss the remaining matches. The injury has shocked the squad, but many players were also stunned by Tchouaméni's aggressive behavior, which included repeated verbal abuse toward Valverde before, during, and after training.

The root of the conflict: Valverde had accused Tchouaméni of leaking details of a previous altercation to the press. The tension escalated until the Frenchman landed a punch, causing Valverde to fall and hit his head. Club directors initially considered suspending both players for the rest of the season, but ultimately imposed a €500,000 fine on each and publicly closed the disciplinary case on Friday.

This incident is the culmination of months of mismanagement. The club had previously failed to discipline Vinicius Junior for his angry reaction when substituted during the Clásico in October. Moreover, they did not support coach Xabi Alonso when a faction of players turned against him, undermining his authority. According to an internal source, after the Clásico, club president Florentino Pérez merely told Alonso: "Take care of Vinicius."

By not backing their coach and allowing star players to run the dressing room, the board created a toxic environment. The fight between Tchouaméni and Valverde is the inevitable result of a lack of leadership. The club now faces a crisis of discipline and morale, with a fractured squad and an uncertain path forward.

The fines and public closure of the disciplinary process mark a rare step for Real Madrid, which often keeps such matters internal. However, many wonder if the damage is already done. The team's shaky season—marked by inconsistent results and a fractured locker room—may have reached its lowest point. Without unity, even the most talented squad cannot succeed.
