Cusco
Cusco FC, originally founded as Real Garcilaso in 2008, represents the historic Inca capital of Cusco in Peru’s top flight. The club was born from the merger of local amateur sides with the backing of the Garcilaso de la Vega University, aiming to create a professional team that could compete nationally. In just three years, the club achieved a remarkable rise: winning the 2011 Peruvian Segunda División brought them to the elite Liga 1 for the 2012 season. Their debut was nothing short of sensational—finishing as runners-up in both the 2012 and 2013 Torneo Descentralizado, earning consecutive berths in the Copa Libertadores. The team plays its home matches at the Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, a 42,000-seat stadium perched at 3,399 meters above sea level. This high altitude—the highest of any major Peruvian stadium—gives Cusco a fearsome home advantage as visiting opponents struggle with oxygen deprivation. The stadium is named after the famous mestizo chronicler and sits just steps from the archaeological wonders of Sacsayhuamán. Though Cusco has yet to win a national league title, their silverware includes a 2011 Segunda División crown and multiple top-four finishes. They made headlines in 2013 by reaching the group stage of the Copa Libertadores, where they held Argentine giants River Plate to a draw at home. Their best continental run came in 2016, advancing to the second stage of the Copa Sudamericana. Legendary players who donned the blue-and-white stripes include goalkeeper Diego Morales, a fan favorite during the early Libertadores campaigns; striker Gabriel Costa, who top-scored for the club in 2014; and defensive anchor Christian Ramos, later part of Peru’s 2018 World Cup squad. In 2021, Real Garcilaso rebranded to Cusco FC, modernizing its crest and identity to better reflect the city’s global brand, though traditionalists still fondly recall the original name. Playing style revolves around relentless pressure and direct attacking, exploiting the thin air with long balls and set-pieces. The high altitude forces opponents to play at a slower pace, allowing Cusco to dictate tempo. Fan culture is deeply tied to Cusco’s Andean pride; supporters—known as the *Barra del Cusco*—fill the stadium with drums, flags, and songs that echo Inca heritage. The club’s biggest rivalry is the Clásico Cusqueño against Cienciano, a clash that divides the city. Matches are fiercely contested, with Cienciano holding the edge in historical trophies but Cusco often dominating in recent meetings. Currently, Cusco FC competes in Liga 1 Peruana, aiming to re-establish themselves as title contenders after a mid-table 2023. With increased investment and a strong youth academy, they seek to become the dominant force in southern Peru. A fascinating fact: Cusco is the only club in the world to be named after a city that was once the capital of the Inca Empire, and its players often acclimatize by training at even higher-altitude facilities in the Sacred Valley.
