Team profile
Inter Turku
FC Inter Turku, founded in 1990, emerged from a merger of local clubs in the historic city of Turku, Finland’s former capital. Despite being one of the youngest top-flight clubs in the country, Inter quickly established itself as a force in Finnish football. The club plays its home matches at the 9,372-capacity Veritas Stadion, a modern multi-purpose venue that also hosts athletics, located in the Kupittaa district of Turku. The city, known for its medieval castle and archipelago, provides a passionate footballing backdrop, with Inter sharing a fierce rivalry with city neighbors TPS, the oldest club in Finland. Inter Turku’s most golden era came in the late 2000s and early 2010s. They won their first Veikkausliiga (Finnish top division) title in 2008, followed by a second league championship in 2015. The club also claimed the Finnish Cup in 2009 and 2018, and the Finnish League Cup in 2008 and 2013. On the European stage, Inter has made several appearances in UEFA Champions League qualifiers, but they remain best known internationally for their 2012–13 UEFA Europa League campaign, where they reached the third qualifying round and narrowly lost to Genk. Their most famous European result was a 3–2 home win over Italian giants Roma in a 1998 Intertoto Cup match—a stunning upset that still resonates with fans. Legendary players include forward Timo Furuholm, the club’s all-time top scorer and a key figure in the 2008 title win; striker Mika Ojala, who later played for HSV; and defender Aki Lahtinen. More recently, Nigerian forward Irakli Sirbiladze and Finnish international Rasmus Karjalainen have made their mark. The club’s identity is built on attacking, possession-based football, with a focus on developing young talent through their academy. Inter’s playing style under various coaches has emphasized technical skill and quick transitions, though they are known for being solid defensively. Fan culture is vibrant but relatively small compared to other European clubs. The main supporter group, "Siniset" (The Blues), creates a lively atmosphere at Veritas Stadion with banners, chants, and flares, especially during local derbies. The Turku derby against TPS is the standout fixture—intense and often decisive for league bragging rights. Inter has historically been seen as the newer, more ambitious club challenging TPS’s traditional dominance. In recent years, Inter has remained competitive in Veikkausliiga, often finishing in the top half and occasionally challenging for titles, though they have not won the league since 2015. Interesting fact: The club’s name "Inter" was chosen to reflect an international outlook, unusual for Finnish clubs at the time. Today, Inter Turku continues to be a symbol of modern Finnish football, blending ambition with a proud underdog spirit.
