Waterford
Waterford FC, known as “The Blues,” was founded in 1930 and has become one of the most storied clubs in Irish football. Based in the historic port city of Waterford in the southeast of Ireland, the club’s early years saw rapid success, winning its first FAI Cup in 1937—the first team from outside Dublin to lift the trophy. The club’s golden era came in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when under manager Alfie Hale, Waterford dominated the League of Ireland, claiming six league titles between 1966 and 1973. This period also saw memorable European campaigns against teams like Manchester United, Celtic, and Valencia. The club plays its home matches at the Waterford Regional Sports Centre (RSC), a 5,500-capacity stadium (with 1,200 seated) located in the heart of the city. Known for its tight, atmospheric pitch, the RSC has been a fortress for the Blues, with passionate support creating an intimidating environment for visitors. Waterford’s traditional playing style emphasizes attacking football, quick passing through midfield, and a strong work ethic—a reflection of the club’s blue-collar roots and the resilience of the city itself. Legendary players include striker Johnny Matthews, the club’s all-time leading scorer with over 200 goals; Alfie Hale, the driving force both as a player and manager; and Vinny Arkins, a prolific marksman in the 1990s. Goalkeeper Peter Thomas and midfielder Tommy O’Brien are also revered figures, the latter captaining the side to European glory against Glentoran in 1972. Fan culture is deeply loyal and family-oriented, with the “Blues Supporters Trust” actively involved in the club’s wellbeing. Rivalries are fierce, especially with Cork City—the Munster Derby—and cross-city or provincial clashes with Limerick and Dundalk. A unique fact: Waterford were the first Irish club to install floodlights, doing so in 1959, and they also hold the record for the longest unbeaten home run in League of Ireland history (41 matches from 1968 to 1970). After years of financial ups and downs, including a brief spell as Waterford United, the club reverted to its original name in 2007. Currently, Waterford FC competes in the League of Ireland Premier Division, having secured promotion by winning the 2023 First Division title. The club is rebuilding under a new ownership structure, aiming to recapture its former glory and establish itself as a top-tier force in Irish football once again.
