Reims
Founded in 1909, Stade de Reims is a historic French football club from the city of Reims, the unofficial capital of the Champagne wine region. The club's story is one of early glory, a dramatic fall, and a resilient modern resurgence. In its golden era during the 1950s and early 1960s, Reims was a dominant force in French football and a pioneer on the European stage. The club's home is the Stade Auguste-Delaune, a modern 21,000-capacity arena rebuilt in 2008, which stands on the site of the original stadium. Reims' most glorious period was led by legendary players like Raymond Kopa, the 1958 Ballon d'Or winner, and Just Fontaine, who holds the all-time record for most goals in a single World Cup (13 in 1958). During this time, Reims won six Ligue 1 titles (1949, 1953, 1955, 1958, 1960, 1962) and two Coupe de France trophies. Their greatest achievements, however, came in Europe. Reims reached the inaugural European Cup final in 1956, losing to Real Madrid, and returned to the final in 1959, again falling to the Spanish giants. These campaigns cemented their status as one of Europe's elite clubs of the era. The team was known for its elegant, attacking style, embodying the flair of French football. After financial troubles and relegation to the lower leagues, Reims has experienced a renaissance in the 21st century. They returned to Ligue 1 in 2018 and have since established themselves as a stable top-flight side, known for excellent youth development and a pragmatic, well-organized playing style under coach Will Still. The club's identity is deeply tied to its city and the Champagne region, with a loyal fanbase that passionately supports "Les Rouge et Blanc." A notable rivalry exists with nearby club Stade de Reims' historical adversary, though their most intense modern clashes are often with other northeastern clubs. An interesting fact is that the club's crest features a champagne flute, a direct nod to its regional heritage.
