Lanus
Club Atlético Lanús, affectionately known as "El Granate" (The Garnet), is a storied Argentine football institution founded on January 3, 1915, in the southern Buenos Aires suburb of Lanús. The club's origins trace back to a group of young men from the local "La Unión" neighborhood who, inspired by the passion for football, decided to form their own team. The choice of the distinctive garnet (deep red) color for their jerseys was reportedly influenced by the color of a popular local tram line, cementing a unique identity from the outset. The club's home is the Estadio Ciudad de Lanús – Néstor Díaz Pérez, a modern fortress inaugurated in 1929 and renovated over the years, with a capacity of approximately 47,000. It stands as the heart of the community in Lanús, Partido de Lanús, in the Gran Buenos Aires area. Lanús's history is marked by periods of growth and significant triumphs. After decades in the lower divisions, they became a permanent fixture in the Argentine top flight from the 1990s onward. Their golden era arrived in the 21st century, highlighted by winning their first-ever Primera División title in the 2007 Apertura tournament. This was followed by further league success in the 2016 Primera División, and they have also claimed several national cups, including the Copa del Bicentenario (2016) and the Supercopa Argentina (2016). Internationally, Lanús made a historic run to the final of the 2017 Copa Libertadores, narrowly losing to Grêmio, and won the Copa CONMEBOL in 1996. The club's identity is built on a passionate, working-class fan base known for their intense support, particularly in the "Este" stand. Their playing style has often been characterized as tactical, resilient, and effective, capable of competing with Argentina's giants. Legendary figures who have worn the garnet jersey include playmaker Diego Valeri, prolific striker José Sand, and defender Carlos Izquierdoz. A defining rivalry is the "Clásico del Sur" against Banfield, a fierce local derby that divides the southern suburbs of Buenos Aires. Currently, Lanús competes in Argentina's top division, maintaining its status as a competitive and respected force, forever embodying the spirit of its community and its over a century of history.
