Radnik Surdulica, officially Fudbalski klub Radnik Surdulica, is a Serbian professional football club based in the small town of Surdulica, nestled in the Pčinja District in southern Serbia. Founded in 1926 under the name Radnički, the club has undergone multiple name changes, finally adopting Radnik in the post-war period. The club’s early years were spent in lower divisions, with the team representing a working-class community that relied on textile and tobacco industries. For decades, Radnik remained a regional side, but a dramatic transformation began in the 2010s. The club plays its home matches at the Gradski stadion Surdulica, a modest ground with a capacity of around 3,300 spectators, often full to the brim on matchdays. The stadium is known for its intimate atmosphere, with fans close to the pitch. Surdulica itself is a town of about 10,000 people, making Radnik’s presence in the top flight a remarkable underdog story. Radnik’s greatest achievement came when they won the Serbian First League (second tier) in the 2014–15 season, earning promotion to the Serbian SuperLiga for the first time in club history. Since then, they have established themselves as a mainstay in the top division, despite limited resources. They have never won a major domestic trophy, but their fourth-place finish in the 2020–21 SuperLiga season was historic, securing a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers. In that European debut, Radnik eliminated Gżira United of Malta before falling to Bulgarian giants CSKA Sofia in the second qualifying round — a memorable run that brought international attention. While Radnik has not produced a roster of household names, several players have left their mark. Striker Milan Đokić, who later played for Red Star and Vojvodina, began his career here. In recent years, midfielder Nemanja Tomić and winger Jovan Nišić provided creative sparks. The club’s identity is built on hard work, discipline, and tactical organization — a classic small-club pragmatism. They often employ a compact defensive block and rely on swift counter-attacks, making them difficult opponents for wealthier sides. Fan culture is deeply local, with a loyal supporter group known as “Tobacco Boys” (referencing Surdulica’s tobacco industry history). They create a vibrant, noisy atmosphere, especially in derbies against fellow southern Serbian clubs like Dinamo Vranje or Dubočica, though intense rivalries are limited. The club’s most interesting fact is its survival against the odds: Surdulica is one of the smallest cities in Europe to host a top-flight club, a testament to smart management and community spirit. As of the current season, Radnik Surdulica competes in the Serbian SuperLiga, typically finishing in the lower half of the table but safely avoiding relegation. Their continued presence in the elite is a source of pride for the town and a fascinating chapter in Serbian football’s story.
