FAI杯

The FAI Cup, officially known as the Sports Direct Men's FAI Cup for sponsorship reasons, is the premier knockout cup competition in Irish football and one of the oldest national cup tournaments in the world. Founded in 1922 by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) following the partition of Ireland, the competition was established as a direct counterpart to the Irish Cup, which continued under the jurisdiction of the Irish Football Association (IFA) in Northern Ireland. The first final was held in 1922, with St. James's Gate defeating Shamrock Rovers 1-0. The competition follows a traditional single-elimination knockout format, open to all clubs affiliated with the FAI, from the top-tier League of Ireland Premier Division down to intermediate and junior non-league sides. This structure creates a celebrated "David vs. Goliath" dynamic, where lower-division teams can draw professional clubs in early rounds, leading to memorable upsets. Typically, around 40 to 50 teams enter each year, with matches decided by extra time and penalties if level after 90 minutes. The 2023 final, for instance, saw St. Patrick's Athletic defeat Bohemians in a thrilling Dublin derby. An interesting fact is that the original trophy, used from 1922 to 1987, was famously stolen in 1958 and never recovered, leading to the creation of the current cup.
