A 34-year-old judge from Rio Grande do Sul has died following an egg retrieval procedure at a fertility clinic in São Paulo. Authorities are investigating the circumstances as a suspected accidental death.

The legal community in southern Brazil is in mourning following the sudden death of Judge Mariana Francisco Ferreira. The 34-year-old magistrate passed away after undergoing a medical procedure for in vitro fertilization.

The incident occurred at a reproductive assistance clinic in Mogi das Cruzes, part of the São Paulo metropolitan area. According to reports, Judge Ferreira underwent the egg collection procedure on a Monday morning. She was discharged but later returned to the clinic experiencing severe pain and chills. Her condition deteriorated, leading to her transfer to a hospital where she was admitted to the intensive care unit and underwent surgery the following day. Despite medical efforts, she died.

Her death has been registered as both a suspected and accidental death, prompting a police investigation. Authorities are working to determine if the tragedy resulted from potential failures in medical care or from complications inherent to the procedure itself.

Colleagues remembered Judge Ferreira as a vibrant and dedicated professional. She had been working in the Rio Grande do Sul judiciary since late 2023 and had recently been assigned to the criminal court in Sapiranga. Those who worked with her described her as full of energy, with a profound commitment to justice, particularly in cases involving domestic violence.

The clinic involved, Invitro Reprodução Assistida, issued a statement expressing deep sorrow. It stated that from the first signs of complication, its medical team immediately followed technical protocols and provided emergency care, transferring the patient to an appropriate hospital. The clinic emphasized that all surgical and medical procedures carry inherent risks, even when performed with proper protocols and oversight.

The Tribunal de Justiça do Rio Grande do Sul declared three days of official mourning. Flags were flown at half-mast at the tribunal's buildings. The state's judges' association also expressed profound regret, noting Judge Ferreira was a beloved colleague full of life and enthusiasm for her judicial role.
