Brazilian singer Ed Motta has a long history of public incidents, including a recent chair-throwing episode in a Rio restaurant and past insults toward hip-hop listeners and Brazilian fans abroad.

Brazilian musician Ed Motta is once again at the center of a public controversy following a disruptive incident at a Rio de Janeiro restaurant. The episode is the latest in a series of confrontational moments and inflammatory statements that have marked the singer's public life.

The most recent event occurred at the Grado restaurant in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood late on a Saturday night. According to reports, Motta became agitated over a 'corkage fee,' a common charge for patrons who bring their own beverages. Upon leaving the establishment, he grabbed a chair from an empty table and hurled it into the dining area. The chair bounced off a table and grazed a waiter. As he passed another table, he knocked over a woman's purse.

The situation escalated further after Motta's departure. About ten minutes later, a dispute broke out between members of his group and a neighboring couple. The argument turned physical, resulting in one customer requiring seven stitches for a head injury. In a subsequent interview, Ed Motta acknowledged he had 'exceeded limits' during the restaurant incident but specifically denied throwing the chair at an employee.

This event is far from an isolated one. In 2015, Motta sparked outrage by announcing on social media that he would not speak or sing in Portuguese during a European tour, despite performing for Brazilian audiences. He described his public as 'more cultured' and referred to some Brazilian fans as a 'simplistic bunch.' He later apologized for the 'frustrations' expressed in his wording.

His critical remarks have also targeted fellow artists. Around the same time, he publicly denounced a tribute to his uncle, the legendary Tim Maia, to be performed by Ivete Sangalo and Criolo, calling the project a 'rotten thing.' Sangalo responded diplomatically, calling Motta 'a dear' but choosing to simply observe the situation.

In June 2024, Motta drew widespread condemnation for comments made during an Instagram live session. He declared that 'anyone who listens to hip-hop is stupid,' a statement he later walked back in a video apology, admitting he had 'erred badly' and was 'grossly disrespectful.'

His on-stage behavior has also caused problems. In November 2024, during a performance at the Rock The Mountain festival, he publicly fired a roadie, a production assistant, from the stage. His team later issued a statement calling his action 'inappropriate' and 'excessive,' confirming he had apologized directly to the employee.

Despite this pattern, Motta has shown little remorse. In a 2024 interview, he stated he learned to 'keep his mouth shut' but added, 'I don't regret anything, I haven't changed any of my opinions.' He also claimed to receive fewer concert invitations in Brazil, perceiving a 'patrol' against him, and remarked that at his age, his ego is 'more intense than ever,' comparing it to that of Leonardo da Vinci.
