Bohemian Football Club, commonly known as Bohemians or simply Bohs, is a professional football club based in Phibsborough, Dublin, Ireland. Founded in 1890, it is the oldest football club in Dublin and one of the most historic in the League of Ireland. The club was established by a group of young men from the Bohemian Hotel on Upper Abbey Street, hence the name. Originally a rugby club, they switched to association football in 1892 and have remained a cornerstone of Irish football ever since. The club’s home ground is Dalymount Park, a legendary stadium with a capacity of around 4,500 (originally over 20,000). Their greatest European run came in 2000–01 when they reached the UEFA Cup second round, defeating Aberdeen and Kaiserslautern before falling to Rangers. Legendary players include Johnny Fullam, the club’s all-time leading scorer with 191 goals; Turlough O’Connor, a prolific striker in the 1970s; and goalkeeper Tommy O’Neill, who kept goal for over a decade. More recently, players like Keith Buckley, the current captain and fan favourite, embody the club’s spirit. The playing style has historically been attacking and passionate, though modern Bohs have adapted to a more tactical, pressing game under managers like Declan Devine and Alan Reynolds. Fan culture at Bohemians is distinctive. The club has a strong tradition of community involvement, progressive politics, and social activism. The supporters’ group, the Bohs Ultras, are known for their colourful displays, singing, and left-leaning banners. The club is also a pioneer in Irish football for its environmental and social justice initiatives, including becoming carbon-neutral and hosting refugee integration events. Their fiercest rivals are Shamrock Rovers, with the Dublin derby known as the “Northside Derby” (though Rovers are now based in Tallaght). The rivalry is intense but mostly good-natured, with both sets of fans sharing mutual respect. Other rivalries include St Patrick’s Athletic and Shelbourne. Currently, Bohemians compete in the League of Ireland Premier Division. After a period of mid-table finishes, they have re-emerged as title contenders, finishing 3rd in 2023. With a strong youth academy and a dedicated fanbase, Bohs remain a symbol of Dublin’s football heritage. Interesting fact: the club’s crest features a harp, reflecting their Irish identity, and they were one of the first clubs in Europe to permanently display a rainbow flag in support of LGBTQ+ rights.
