Electronic Monitoring Program in Rio Grande do Sul: 1,200 Aggressors TrackedThe state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil has significantly expanded its electronic monitoring program for aggressors, according to statements from the state's Public Security Secretariat (SSP-RS). The initiative, aimed at protecting potential victims of domestic violence, has reached a new milestone in its implementation.

Adriana Regina da Costa, the deputy secretary of SSP-RS, provided key updates on the program's progress. She confirmed that the number of aggressors currently being monitored via electronic ankle bracelets has risen to 1,200 individuals.

The program's capacity is also growing. Currently, there are 2,000 ankle bracelets available for use, with expectations to increase this inventory to 3,000 units in the near future. This expansion is designed to enhance the state's ability to monitor a larger number of individuals under restraining orders or other judicial measures.

Most notably, the program has demonstrated a strong record of effectiveness in its primary goal: preventing violence. Since the beginning of the monitoring initiative, there have been zero recorded cases of femicide or attempted femicide against victims who are under the protection of the electronic monitoring system.

This data point underscores the potential of technology-assisted interventions in combating domestic violence and protecting vulnerable individuals. The continued investment in and expansion of the program reflects a commitment to leveraging available tools for public safety and victim protection.
