Manchester United have agreed a £35m initial deal for Atalanta's Éderson as Michael Carrick's first signing, worth up to £38.8m with add-ons.

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Brazilian midfielder Éderson, marking the first acquisition of Michael Carrick’s newly permanent tenure at Old Trafford. The deal, structured as an initial €40.5 million (£35 million), could rise to €45 million (£38.8 million) through performance-related add-ons, confirming the club’s intent to reinforce the engine room after Casemiro’s departure.

Personal terms have been settled on a contract running until June 2030, which includes an option to extend for an additional 12 months. With the summer transfer window opening on June 15, the transfer is expected to be completed early next month once the player undergoes a medical. The 26-year-old, who turns 27 later this month, is seen as a direct replacement for Casemiro, whose contract expired at the end of the season and was not renewed.

Carrick, who took over the reins permanently after a spell as interim boss, identified Éderson alongside director of football Jason Wilcox as the ideal candidate to fill the defensive midfield void. The Brazilian is a natural holding player with the dynamism to surge from box to box, combined with a sharp ability to read the game and disrupt opposition attacks. Those attributes align perfectly with the tactical blueprint Carrick is crafting.

The arrival of Éderson raises immediate questions about the future of Manuel Ugarte, another defensive midfielder who struggled for game time last season. Signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £51 million in the summer of 2024, Ugarte rarely featured and could now be sold or loaned out to free up squad space and recoup some of the investment. The club appears ready to cut its losses on a player who never settled.

Carrick’s ambition does not end with Éderson. The manager is intent on signing at least two new midfielders this window, with a shortlist of high-caliber targets including Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni, valued at around £70 million, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba (£50 million), Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton (at least £60 million), and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. Anderson, however, could command a fee in excess of £100 million and is believed to favour a transfer to Manchester City.

Éderson’s journey to Old Trafford began in his native Brazil, where he played for Cruzeiro, Corinthians, and Fortaleza before moving to Italy with Salernitana. Atalanta snapped him up in January 2022, and his performances in Serie A soon earned him international recognition. He was included in Carlo Ancelotti’s provisional 55-man Brazil squad before the World Cup but did not make the final cut, and has since collected three senior caps, the most recent in a 4-1 defeat to Argentina in March 2025.

For United, the signing represents a clear signal of the club’s new direction under Carrick’s leadership. After a season of transition, the move to secure a relatively understated yet tactically astute midfielder suggests a focus on building a balanced, cohesive unit rather than chasing star names. Éderson’s profile—disciplined, energetic, and technically sound—should provide the midfield stability that was often lacking last term.

Financial fair play considerations also loom large, and the structure of this deal—with a manageable initial fee and add-ons tied to performance—demonstrates a pragmatic approach from the club’s hierarchy. Wilcox’s influence is evident in the targeted, data-driven recruitment, which mirrors the successful models of other top sides that prioritize system fits over market hype.

While some may question whether Éderson can immediately adapt to the Premier League’s intensity, his experience in Serie A—a league renowned for tactical discipline—bodes well. His age and contract length also mean he is entering his prime years, offering United a long-term solution in the heart of midfield. Carrick, a former midfielder of considerable pedigree himself, will likely be instrumental in mentoring the Brazilian through the adjustment period.

The broader implications for the league are notable. With Manchester City and Arsenal also in the market for midfield reinforcements, United’s early move could set the tone for a competitive summer. If Carrick manages to pair Éderson with another elite midfielder from his wishlist, the Red Devils might once again challenge for top honours. But for now, the focus is on the first piece of the puzzle.

As the deal nears completion, supporters will be eager to see how Éderson slots into a side that has often lacked identity in the centre of the park. His arrival, coupled with a potential clear-out of underperforming assets like Ugarte, signals a summer of significant transformation. The medical remains the final hurdle, but all signs point to an announcement within weeks.
