Athletic Club face Valencia on Sunday with European aspirations. Coach Valverde emphasizes the importance of the extra Europa League spot and his team's need

Athletic Club host Valencia this Sunday at San Mamés in a pivotal Liga encounter, as both teams aim to secure their objectives in the season's final stretch. With only a few games remaining, every point is crucial, and Athletic's coach Ernesto Valverde has highlighted the significance of the extra Europa League qualification berth, which this year benefited Rayo Vallecano. The Basque side is eager to capitalize on their recent victory and climb the table.

In his pre-match press conference, Valverde stressed the competitive nature of the current Liga campaign, noting that the small point differences between many teams make the extra European spot an enormous incentive. “It’s a huge motivator,” he said. “We haven’t seen such a tight league in years. We've always fought to be at the top, and this year is no different.” The coach acknowledged that his team must balance confidence from the last win with the necessary tension that comes from being in a tight race.

Valverde also addressed the team's recent form, emphasizing the importance of maintaining alertness. “After winning, you have that boost of confidence, but we have to keep the same intensity and awareness we showed last week,” he explained. “The pressure we felt then is good for us. We need to combine that with the momentum from the victory.” He stressed that the responsibility to win every match remains, especially when in an uncomfortable position in the standings.

Regarding European aspirations, Valverde was cautious but optimistic. “We’d love to qualify, but we focus on the next match, which is Valencia. The margins are so tight that every game is like a final. There's no room for error.” He praised his squad's ability to adapt to different challenges over the course of the season, noting that they have been consistent in chasing positive results.

The Valencia side, currently hovering near the relegation zone, is desperate for points. Valverde acknowledged their threat. “They arrive with great need, just like many teams. They seemed to have recovered some breathing room but haven't reached 40 points yet. I don't know if 42 will be enough this year, but we must be prepared. They beat us in the first half of the season, so we know they are dangerous.”

On the individual level, Valverde praised winger Nico Williams, who scored twice in the previous match. “Goals help attackers regain confidence and daring. Nico is a safe bet for us. His performance shows that recovery and integration take time, but he's getting back to his best.” The coach emphasized the importance of the collective effort as Athletic aims to secure a European berth for next season.

The match against Valencia will be the first of three games in a week for Athletic, and Valverde stressed the need to take advantage of this run. “We want to keep the momentum and compete in every match. The tension we experienced last week should remain, combined with the confidence from winning. That's the formula for success.”

As the season approaches its climax, Athletic Club remains focused on their objective. With a dedicated coach and a motivated squad, they are determined to leave everything on the pitch. The coming days will reveal whether they can secure a spot in European competition.
