Team profile
Chapecoense SC
Founded in 1973 through the merger of two local clubs, Atlético Chapecoense and Independente, Associação Chapecoense de Futebol, universally known as Chapecoense, emerged from the city of Chapecó in Brazil's southern state of Santa Catarina. For decades, the club was a modest but respected force in regional football, embodying the hardworking spirit of its community. Its rise to national prominence began in the 2010s, culminating in a historic and heartbreaking chapter that forever defined its identity. The club's home is the Arena Condá, a modern stadium in Chapecó with a capacity of around 20,000, which became a fortress during their ascent. Chapecoense's most significant achievements include winning the Campeonato Catarinense (Santa Catarina State Championship) multiple times and, most notably, reaching the final of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana. This continental run was a fairy tale for the small club, but it ended in tragedy. On November 28, 2016, while traveling to the final in Colombia, the team's plane crashed, claiming the lives of 71 people, including 19 players, most of the coaching staff, and journalists. The disaster shocked the global football community. In the aftermath, Chapecoense received an outpouring of support. Rival clubs loaned players, and the club was awarded the Copa Sudamericana title posthumously by CONMEBOL as a gesture of honor. The team's identity is now inextricably linked to resilience, unity, and the memory of the "Immortals." Their playing style has traditionally been characterized by organization, collective effort, and fighting spirit, reflecting their underdog status. The fan base, known as "Chape," is fiercely loyal and deeply intertwined with the local community. The club's greatest rivalry is with Criciúma, another major team from Santa Catarina, in the "Clássico do Interior." Following the tragedy, the club rebuilt with a mix of loaned players and new signings, earning widespread admiration. Currently, Chapecoense competes in Brazil's Série B, the second tier of national football, continuing its journey with a profound sense of purpose and a legacy that transcends sport.
