World Cup winner Christophe Dugarry questions claims PSG keeper Safonov deliberately kicked the ball out 7 times in 10 attempts against Bayern's Olise wing.

Former French international Christophe Dugarry has expressed strong skepticism over the tactical explanation for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Matvey Safonov's performance in the Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but a specific aspect of Safonov's play has drawn scrutiny.

Reports suggested that PSG manager Luis Enrique had instructed Safonov to deliberately kick the ball out of play towards the flank where Bayern's winger Michael Olise was operating. The statistics are notable: the Russian goalkeeper sent the ball out for a throw-in on seven out of ten occasions from his goal kicks.

Dugarry, a 1998 World Cup champion with France, found this tactical explanation hard to believe. "Is this a joke? I don't believe it for a second," he stated during an appearance on RMC Sport. His incredulity was aimed at the notion that such a strategy would be a deliberate, high-level tactic from the celebrated coach.

He sarcastically questioned the logic, suggesting that if kicking the ball out of play was the plan, then Enrique might be better suited to coaching rugby. "So the great Luis Enrique's tactic is to kick the ball out of play! Excellent, he should take up rugby!" Dugarri remarked, highlighting his view that the action seemed counterproductive.

While acknowledging the general principle of applying pressure on the flanks to trouble an opponent, Dugarry struggled to see the benefit in this specific execution. "I understand you need to put pressure on the flanks to cause problems for the opponent, but what's the point?" he questioned, implying that simply conceding possession via throw-ins offered little strategic advantage.

The incident has sparked debate about the fine line between innovative game management and ineffective play. Safonov's actions, whether a planned instruction or a series of miscued clearances, became a talking point in the aftermath of the high-stakes European clash.

The match itself was a tightly contested affair, with the 1-1 draw leaving the tie balanced. However, the focus on the goalkeeper's distribution has overshadowed some of the on-field action, bringing a unique tactical subplot into the spotlight.
