Manchester City and Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol are close to agreeing on a contract extension. The new deal would run until June 2030 with an option for an additional year, securing the 24-year-old's long-term future at the club.

Manchester City is reportedly making significant progress in securing the long-term future of one of its most important defenders. According to reports, the Premier League club and Croatian international Josko Gvardiol are nearing an agreement on a contract extension.

The proposed new terms would see the 24-year-old's commitment extended until June 2030, with the agreement also including an option for an additional year. This move would represent a substantial increase in his current deal, which is set to expire in June 2028.

Gvardiol originally joined Manchester City in August 2023, making the move from German club RB Leipzig. He quickly established himself as a versatile and valuable member of the squad. During his first season with the club, he primarily featured as a left-back, making 42 appearances across all competitions and contributing five goals and three assists as the team secured the Premier League title.

His adaptability and quality were further demonstrated in the following campaign. In the 2024-25 season, he transitioned to a central defensive role and made 52 appearances, scoring six goals and providing two assists. His consistent performances have been a cornerstone of the team's defensive structure.

The current season has seen Gvardiol continue as a first-choice starter, playing as a left centre-back. Before his recent injury setback, he had already accumulated 23 appearances, scoring twice and adding five assists to his tally.

Unfortunately, his impressive run was interrupted in January during a Premier League match against Chelsea. Gvardiol suffered a fractured fibula in his right leg, which has sidelined him for a period. In his absence, manager Pep Guardiola has relied on a defensive partnership of Uzbekistan international Abdukodir Khusanov and England's Marc Guéhi.

Securing Gvardiol on a new long-term contract would be a major statement of intent from Manchester City, locking down a player who has proven his worth in multiple defensive positions and has been integral to the club's recent successes.
