Bayern Munich confirms Alphonso Davies will miss several weeks with a hamstring injury suffered in the Champions League semi-final, putting his World Cup

Canada's captain and star defender, Alphonso Davies, is facing a significant injury setback just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Bayern Munich announced on Friday that the 25-year-old full-back sustained a hamstring injury that will keep him out of action for "several weeks."

The injury occurred during Wednesday's dramatic Champions League semi-final second leg between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, but PSG advanced to the final with a 6-5 aggregate victory. Davies was forced off during the contest, and subsequent medical evaluation confirmed the hamstring issue.

This latest injury casts serious doubt over Davies's availability for the remainder of Bayern Munich's season. The Bundesliga champions have two league matches remaining, against Wolfsburg and Cologne, before facing Stuttgart in the German Cup final on May 23. It is considered unlikely that Davies will be fit for any of these fixtures.

More critically, the timeline places his participation in the World Cup in jeopardy. Canada, as co-hosts of the tournament, open their campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 in Toronto. Davies will now be in a race against time to achieve full fitness for that opening match.

Canada Soccer has issued a statement confirming it is in "close contact" with both the player and Bayern Munich's medical staff. The federation emphasized its commitment to supporting his recovery, stating it will provide "every available resource, including specialized soft tissue expertise, to give him the best possible pathway back to full fitness."

This is the latest in a series of muscle injury problems for Davies since his return from a major anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. That serious knee injury, suffered on international duty in March 2024, kept him sidelined for eight months and sparked a public dispute between his agent, Bayern Munich, and Canada Soccer over the decision to play him in that match.

Davies has not represented Canada since that Nations League game in March 2025 and was already ruled out of the most recent national team camp due to a separate hamstring problem. Head coach Jesse Marsch is expected to name his preliminary World Cup squad later this month, with friendlies scheduled against Uzbekistan on June 1 and Ireland on June 5.
