Super Liga
The Serbian Super Liga, officially known as the Mozzart Bet Super Liga for sponsorship reasons, stands as the pinnacle of professional football in Serbia. Founded in 2006 following the dissolution of the Serbia and Montenegro league system, it represents the top tier of the Serbian football pyramid. The league's roots, however, trace back much further, inheriting the rich and turbulent history of Yugoslav and Serbian football. The competition features 16 teams playing a 30-round regular season, after which the league splits. The top eight enter a championship playoff, while the bottom eight contest a relegation playoff. This format intensifies the battle for both the title and survival. The champion secures a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, while other European places are distributed to cup winners and high-ranking league finishers. The league's landscape is historically dominated by two Belgrade giants: Red Star Belgrade and Partizan Belgrade. Their fierce rivalry, known as the "Eternal Derby," is one of the most passionate in world football. Red Star, the 1991 European Cup winners, and Partizan, a consistent European competitor, have shared the vast majority of league titles. Other notable clubs include Vojvodina, a historic force from Novi Sad, and Čukarički, which has emerged as a modern, well-run club challenging the traditional hierarchy. The Super Liga has been a launchpad for numerous world-class talents. Serbian legends like Dragan Džajić, Dejan Stanković, and Nemanja Vidić began their journeys here. More recently, it has exported stars such as Aleksandar Mitrović, Dušan Tadić, and Luka Jović. The league also attracts experienced international players, adding quality and diversity. Currently, the competitive landscape is seeing a gradual shift. While Red Star and Partizan remain the primary title contenders, clubs like Vojvodina and Čukarički are increasingly competitive, aiming to break the Belgrade duopoly. The league is recognized for its passionate fan culture, tactical development, and as a crucial stepping stone for players aiming for Europe's top leagues. An interesting fact is that the league's official match ball is uniquely branded with the Serbian coat of arms, emphasizing national pride in its top sporting competition.
