Brazil's health agency Anvisa has suspended production and ordered a recall of Ypê brand cleaning products after finding serious manufacturing failures and potential bacterial contamination, posing risks especially to immunocompromised individuals.

In a major regulatory move, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has suspended manufacturing and mandated a broad recall of products from the popular Ypê brand. The action targets all batches of detergents, liquid soaps, and disinfectants whose lot numbers end in '1,' produced at the company's facility in Amparo, São Paulo.

The decision stems from an inspection that uncovered significant breaches in Good Manufacturing Practices. Anvisa reported finding failures in quality assurance and control systems that indicate a sanitary risk and the possibility of microbiological contamination in the finished products. This escalated from a voluntary recall the manufacturer, Química Amparo, had announced in November 2025, which was limited to specific batches of liquid laundry detergents where the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa was detected.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic microorganism commonly found in the environment—in air, water, and soil. It rarely causes illness in healthy people but can pose a serious threat to those with weakened immune systems. This group includes cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients on immunosuppressants, individuals with uncontrolled HIV/AIDS, and those on long-term steroid therapy. For these individuals, the bacterium can cause or worsen infections.

Ypê has pushed back strongly against Anvisa's order, calling it "arbitrary and disproportionate." The company expressed indignation and stated it would appeal the decision. In its defense, Ypê argued that the risk to the general population is "very low or negligible," citing independent lab reports that it says prove its products are "totally safe and adequate for consumption."

The company also provided specific safety guidance. It stated that normal use of the products diluted in washing machine water drastically reduces any bacterial load. Furthermore, it noted there is no medical literature documenting infections caused by clothes washed with contaminated household detergents. The bacterium is not volatile, is not carried by fragrances, and poses no inhalation risk. The primary precaution advised is to avoid direct, prolonged skin contact with the concentrated product, especially for immunocompromised individuals with open wounds. Consumers are urged to wash hands after handling and ensure clothes are thoroughly rinsed and dried before wearing.

The recall affects a wide range of Ypê's household cleaning lineup. The list includes various models of dishwashers like Lava-louças Ypê, Lava-louças Clear Care, and Lava-louças Concentrado Ypê Green. Also impacted are liquid laundry detergents such as Tixan Ypê Combate Mau Odor, Tixan Ypê Antibac, and Ypê Express. Disinfectants like Desinfetante Bak Ypê and Desinfetante Pinho Ypê are also part of the recall, provided their lot numbers end in '1.'

Consumers are advised to check the lot number on the product label. If it ends in '1,' they should immediately stop using the product and contact the company's customer service to arrange an exchange. While the risk is considered low for the general public, the alert is particularly critical for immunocompromised individuals, who should avoid any contact with the concentrated product.
