A 34-year-old judge passed away after suffering a hemorrhage during an egg retrieval procedure at a São Paulo fertility clinic. Police are investigating the circumstances of her death.

A tragic incident has emerged from the world of reproductive medicine in Brazil, as a young judge has died following a standard fertility procedure. Mariana Francisco Ferreira, a 34-year-old magistrate, suffered a fatal hemorrhage after undergoing an egg collection for in vitro fertilization at a clinic in Mogi das Cruzes, part of the Greater São Paulo area. Her death on Wednesday morning has prompted a police investigation into the exact cause.

The sequence of events began on a Monday morning when Judge Ferreira underwent the egg retrieval at the Invitro Reprodução Assistida clinic. She was discharged around 9 a.m. and returned home, but soon began experiencing severe pain and chills. Her condition deteriorated, prompting her mother to bring her back to the clinic by approximately 11 a.m. Upon her return, medical staff discovered she was suffering from a vaginal hemorrhage.

The attending physician at the clinic performed initial interventions, including a suture to attempt to control the bleeding. Following this first aid, Judge Ferreira was transferred to the Mogi Mater Maternity Hospital, arriving at 5 p.m. and being admitted directly to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The following day, Tuesday, she underwent surgery at 9 p.m. Despite these efforts, her condition remained critical.

In the early hours of Wednesday, Judge Ferreira suffered two cardiorespiratory arrests. Resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful, and her death was officially confirmed at 6:03 a.m. The case has been registered by police as both a suspicious death and an accidental death, with investigators working to determine whether the fatality resulted from inherent medical complications or a potential failure in care.

In response to the public attention, the Invitro Reprodução Assistida clinic issued a statement expressing profound sorrow. The clinic asserted that its medical team immediately implemented technical protocols from the first signs of complication and provided necessary emergency care. It also facilitated the patient's transfer to a specialized hospital with continuous monitoring by their team.

The clinic's statement further emphasized that all surgical and medical procedures carry inherent risks and possible complications, even when performed with adherence to technical protocols and adequate structure. It affirmed that it has always operated within applicable technical and regulatory norms and that all its professionals are cooperating with the relevant authorities to clarify the events.

Judge Ferreira was a native of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, and had taken her oath as a judge in Rio Grande do Sul in December 2023. She served in the Criminal Court of the Sapiranga district in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. The Rio Grande do Sul Court of Justice issued a note lamenting her death, highlighting her career and dedication, and declared three days of official mourning. The Association of Judges of Rio Grande do Sul (AJURIS) also expressed deep sorrow, stating her premature loss mourns the state's judiciary.

The police investigation continues as authorities seek to establish the precise medical circumstances that led to this fatal outcome. Based on reporting from g1.
