Senator Ciro Nogueira calls a federal police operation targeting his ties to Banco Master 'political persecution,' claiming it aims to stop poll leaders ahead

Senator Ciro Nogueira, the president of Brazil's Progressista Party (PP), has publicly denounced a recent federal police operation as a politically motivated attack. The operation, the fifth phase of 'Compliance Zero,' is investigating alleged financial fraud connected to Banco Master and its founder, Daniel Vorcaro.

In a statement released on social media, Nogueira characterized the investigation as 'persecution' that occurs 'every political year.' He argued that such actions are consistently aimed at derailing candidates who lead in the polls, a pattern he claims to have experienced before.

The police action, authorized by Supreme Court Justice André Mendonça, involved search and seizure warrants executed at locations in the Federal District and the state of Piauí, where Nogueira is a senator. Authorities allege the senator acted in the bank's interests in exchange for improper benefits, including proposing a legislative amendment to expand the coverage of the Credit Guarantee Fund (FGC).

The judicial order also resulted in the freezing of assets totaling up to R$18.85 million. The investigation extends beyond Nogueira, with another target, Felipe Cançado Vorcaro, a cousin of the bank's founder, being arrested as part of the operation.

Nogueira, who is currently a candidate for the Senate in Piauí, expressed deep concern about the reputational damage from the operation. 'Who returns a person's honor after such a malicious and baseless attack?' he questioned in his public statement.

Drawing a parallel to a similar situation in 2018, just 15 days before an election, Nogueira claimed the perceived political persecution backfired, leading to a six-point rise in the polls and an eventual victory. He suggested the current situation could have a similar galvanizing effect on his supporters.

Concluding his message, the senator framed the pressure as a test of his commitment to public service. He stated that enduring such scrutiny is only possible for those 'born to serve the people' and vowed that nothing would make him abandon the trust placed in him by the citizens of Piauí.
