Florianópolis restricts running, triathlon, and cycling events on the Island from December 2026 to March 2027, moving them to Beira-Mar Continental to manage traffic and event scheduling.

Florianópolis has announced a significant change for sports enthusiasts planning to participate in events on the Island during the upcoming summer season. The city government has officially restricted the organization of road races, marathons, triathlons, and cycling competitions on the Island of Santa Catarina between December 2026 and March 2027.

According to the new municipal decree published this week, all such sporting events during this peak tourist period will be exclusively permitted in the Beira-Mar Continental area. This means popular routes across other parts of the Island will be off-limits for organized competitions during the summer months.

The primary goal behind this decision is to better organize the city's event calendar, prevent scheduling conflicts, and minimize the impact on traffic and urban mobility. The restriction is part of a broader new framework that requires mandatory registration for any sports event utilizing public roads and spaces in the capital.

Under the new rules, event organizers must be registered legal entities and provide detailed information including the specific location, race course, expected number of participants, and any necessary road closures. A municipal commission will then review each application, assessing factors like traffic impact, date compatibility, and the feasibility of the proposed route.

Even after receiving initial approval through the registration process, organizers must still secure additional authorizations to proceed with their events. The deadline to submit registration requests is October 31, 2026, and applications must be filed at least 60 days before the scheduled event date.

This move comes as Florianópolis continues to solidify its reputation as a premier destination for runners and endurance athletes. The city's pleasant climate, scenic tourist spots, and breezy waterfronts have made it increasingly popular among the running community. Recent events like the Florianópolis International Half Marathon have drawn thousands of participants, showcasing the city's appeal.

The Island has also been the stage for remarkable individual athletic achievements. Earlier this year, ultramarathon runner Bruno Jeremias completed a full loop around the Island of Santa Catarina in under 24 hours, covering over 160 kilometers across asphalt, trails, and sandy beaches. In another notable feat, triathlete Gabriel Melzer completed the cycling portion of the Ironman 70.3 Florianópolis on a vintage 1979 bicycle, overcoming a fall and the bike's considerable weight.

While the summer restrictions will redirect organized events to the mainland waterfront, the city's passion for sports and outdoor activities remains undiminished. Based on reporting from g1.
